The first issue of the Goencho Ulo was released by the noted composer andKonkani activist, Ulhas Buyao, on 24 November, 2005 morning at the TristaoBraganza e Cunha memorial Hall, near Azad Maidan, Panaji.The Editor, Joel D’D’Souza, the Editorial Consultant Mr.Tomazinho Cardoz , Afonso ‘Bond’Braganza, Dr.Pratap Naik, s.j., Miguel Braganza, and other Konkani loverswere present at the function.Speaking on the occasion, Shri Buyao, complimented the team for bringing outa high quality publication. He said the Konkani language was lucky as it wasable to dress itself in five different scripts while many languages gowithout a script to cover them. If the Chinese wanted to learn the language,they could write Konkani in Chinese characters, too. The language wasimportant, he said.Mr. Tomazinho Cardoz and Dr.Pratap Naik emphasized on the apolitical natureon the publication , Goench Ulo, and assured that the content would helpbuild rather than destroy.Miguel Braganza acknowledged the priceless is the contribution from BenAntao. The Rs.30,000/- that he sent funded the first issue to a greatextent. It was the seed capital. The seed has germinated. Maendra Alvaresgave his permission to use an "Ancestral Goa"advertisement as an ear-panel.Bruno Gomindes gave his TRAVCO advertisement. So did the Government of Goa,which has Konkani as its official language.. We have to TEAM---- TogetherEveryone Achieves More !Joel D'Souza, Dr. Pratap Naik,s.j. Tomazinho Cardoz, Bonaventure D'Pietro,Daniel F. D'Souza, Salvador Fernandes, Roque Fernandes and the staff ofDiamond Publiciations have worked as it it were a labour of love. Its fruitwill be seen and read by many. There will be bouquets[ it is the firstcolour tabloid in Romi that is fully POSITIVE in its attitude] andbrickbats, too. We are prepared for them.The need is to broadbase the movement for use of the Romi script withoutprejuduce to the other scripts, official or otherwise. Attached is the editorial of the newly launched Konkani tabloid in Roman script written by Joel D'Souza who, in the words of Cecil Pinto, is world famous all over Goa!
The ten-page tabloid [6 colour pages + 2 B/W pages] is issued free to the konkani reading public all over Goa. Currently it is planned as a fortnightly. We hope to raise funds to keep it that way. It will be self-financing or cease to exist. The onus is on all who love the language and want the script to generate advertisement revenue. The initial push came from Rs.30,000/- sent by Ben Antao. We acknowledge it with gratitude. The rest is history.

Keep up the good work.
At your convenience, please let me know of the following:
- the frequency of the tabloid (monthly, quarterly, etc....)
- how to get copies to Kuwait.
- how to support via. advertisements (rates per page/half page/quarter page).
- type of Konkani articles (themes, subjects to be covered).
Finally, we wish to archive all issues (starting from Issue No. 1) on our website at www.goa-world.com free of charge.
We used to archive issues of GOA TODAY in the entirity free of charge (Cecil will update you on this subject)!

I am not very computer savvy. Joel is placing the entire HTML text on Tim D'Mello's website www.goacom.com . It should be up there by tomorrow. It would be nice to have it on goaworld, too. Perhaps Constantino will put us on Supergoa.com. I am sending word files to various groups, free to use. Let the aroma of Konknni spread widely and freely. Ours is a T E A M approach Together Everyone Achieves More. the more we are together, the happier we shall be!
The advertising rates are quite nominal and the column sizes are of the standard newspapers, i.e. 40 mm column width. A standard death advertisement in the newspaper is 2 colx 6 cm or 12 cc. At Rs.210/- per cc it would cost about Rs 2,520/-. A black and white advertisement of the same size would cost Rs600/- in the GOENCHO ULO. I am still pursuing the offer of Fausto D'Costa for the transfer of the name GOENCHO AVAZ for free. His paper's name continues, his late brother Fr. Freddy is remembered in the footer and we get a registered newspaper on the platter. I had offered him a [say,2 colx5 cm] advert. for the 'Gulab' free as bonus while we print for the first year at least. He could do likewise in the Gulab. We have done so for the IXTT in this issue.
A 2 Col X 10 CM or 20 cc advertisement would cost Rs. 4200/- in the Navhind Times, Herald or Tarun Bharat and slightly less in the other newspapers[ with less than 10,000 copies]. In this targeted-to-Konkani-readers tabloid, the same size B/W advertisement would cost just Rs.1000/- and one could get a true COLOUR advt. of the same size on the Back page [or on the glossy centre insert] for Rs.4000/-
For those who know advt. marketing the rates are as under

Pages 3,4,7 & 8 Rs.50 per cc Rs.11,000/- full page, Rs.6000/- half page and Rs.3000/- quarter page.
Colour
Front page[ limited adverts] Rs.250/ cc No full page or half page advts. Rs.15,000/- quarter page
Back page[ unlimited] Rs.200/ cc Full Rs.45,000/- half page Rs.25,000/- Quarter Rs.15,000/-
Centre insert[glossy art paper]Rs.200/- cc Full Rs.45,000/- half page Rs.25,000/- Quarter Rs.15,000/-
We are offering above par quality advts in the glossy centre insert with the intention to rlieve the pressure of advertisements on the Front/last page, specially the font page which is the face of the tabloid and needs to have the cause at its heart. The cover paper quality has been intentionally kept inferior to the centre insert.
Between you, Cecil and Roque you should be able to find the best way to get the money from where it to comes to the account in Goa. Right now it is with Diamond Publications. I hope to have a Trust or Society in place soon to handle that. Money is the cause of many problems. We need it just the same.
The GOENCHO ULO is a fortnightly . FREE. The next two issues are scheduled for 07 Dec and 19 Dec. The New Year issue may be out around 07 January, 2006. All of us are working for free. I have committed, with the consent of the others, a remuneration only for the Editor. We need to look at a "proof reader" with honorarium, too. It is on a shoe -string budget and working on goodwill, credit and receivables...excluding Ben Antao's Rs.30,000/-, Linda's lunch and Bebinca for three at Viva Panjim [ She refused to bill us.] and Diamond's sponsorship of the publicity banners at the PLANT UTSAV and the launch function.
I count promises only when they are fulfilled. As of now , I have promises of two advertisements locally. How much we will get and when does not worry me. God provides the solutions if the intentions are good and effort is full.
I do not know how to get it across to Kuwait/UAE. Could we network on Gulf Goans or Goaworld to find out who is willing to carry the excess baggage and who will compensate him/her for the effort and costs. Each copy is around a 20 grammes, that makes fifty copies to a kilo in dry weather. Someone must be willing to make that sacrifice. DHL and other couriers charge a bomb. We can give about a hundred copies free. More , if there is advertising support from the Arabian Gulf. The economics must work or the whole thing will fail. That is not the way I want it to be. I like to spawn successes...and give it all that I can...or shut up and sit quietly. Participation or "Also tried" is not the type of certificate I like. Won. Done. Succeeded. These are the words of my choice.
We have the funds to survive till the next issue. We need all the advertising support we can get. I persoanlly prefer advertising support to donations but realise through experience that it is not easy to get advertisements for the first few issues. T E A M can make a difference. Those new to Konkani/konknni in Roman script may please note the the
use of
the double alphabet in the spelling is for emphasis on the sound e.g.
a=A
and aa=aah n= N as in 'No' whereas nn is N 'Rann of Kutch', similar is
the
case with t, d, e . 'nv' replaces 'ao' of Iberian languages thus the
'pao'
becomes 'panv' and 'paol' becomes 'panvl'. If you read Romi Konknni
like
English, you will be saying something else altogether ;-)) . Read it
like
Romi Hindi in the film titles. Aa gale lag jha! ]

Release of 'Goencho Ulo'
Just got the information that the Romi Konkani Tabloid 'Goencho Ulo' has
been formally released at Panjim this morning. The launching of the new Romi
newspaper was held at the 'Konkani Writers Meeting' held at the T.B. Cunha
Hall.
Congratulations to the Publishers 'Diamond Publications' Panjim and Miguel
Braganza and his Team for keeping their promise of releasing the first issue
to coincide with the Novenas of 'Goencho Saib'. May our Patron Saint St.
Francis Xavier bless the efforts of all those who are giving their best in
this mission.

First congrats to those behind this new venture in bringing out the Romi Konknni fortnightly. It's my hope that this paper would endure the financial woes and other factors that resuled in killing other Romi Konknni papers, including dailies.
I read that the next step is to have a daily. Without sounding pessimistic, the people behind Goencho Ulo should put off their big dream of having a daily. These people could instead work hard to make the paper a weekly first. The history of failed daily papers is known to those who have watched the Goan media scene.
I would like to request the group to put an internet edition. It should be subscribtion-based, just like Goan Observer.

Panaji, Nov 25: A new Konkani tabloid "Goencho Ulo" in Roman Script launched
on Thursday.
The first editorial of the newly-launched Konkani tabloid in Roman script
written by Joel D'Souza.
The ten-page tabloid [6 colour pages + 2 B/W pages] is issued free to the
konkani reading public all over Goa. Currently it is planned as a
fortnightly. The promoters hope to raise funds to keep it that way. It will
be self-financing or cease to exist. The onus is on all who love the
language and want the script to generate advertisement revenue. The initial
push came from Rs.30,000/- sent by Ben Antao.
"Anink ek panvl, anink ek divli pettli." meaning "One more step, one more lamp is lit." is the title of the front page edit

On 24 November Diamond Publications, Panaji have launched a new Konkani
fortnightly called "Goencho Ulo". It is a coloured periodical with tabloid
size. It has ten pages out which 6 are coloured. Miguel Braganza, Tomazinho
Cardozo and Pratap Naik, S.J. were the brain behind this new venture.
Roque Fernandes is the publisher. Goencho Ulo was released at T.B.Cunha
Hall, Panaji by the veteran singer Mr. Ullas Buyanv. The editor of the
periodical Mr. Joel D'Souza, Pratap Naik and Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo and
Miguel Braganza addressed the public. A few prominent writers, readers and
journalists were present for the function. The first three issues of the
periodical will be distributed free of cost to Konkani readers.

I would entitle as above the translated work of Shennoy Goembab’s Konkani Bhashechem Zait, though very much aware that it was the self-same title adopted by the late R.N. Naik, when he serialised his own English translation of this book in the Bombay-based Goan Tribune, then edited by the noted Goan novelist and short-story writer , the freedom-fighter Lambert Mascarenhas, which I happened to read in part. Sebastiao Mariano Borges also has taken the same title for his translation, probably in the present context of a freshly-raked up linguistic squabble in a triumphal vein that transpires through the original work which is of a highly polemical character. Borges has been a senior lecturer and head of the department of Geology at Chowgule College,Margao, and earlier taught that subject at Somaiya College in Bombay, and co-authored a book entitled Fundamentals of Geology, a seminal work in the subject. He is noted for his perceptive dissection of issues that have been troubling Goan society in recent times, particularly one relating to the linguistic controversy kicked up by hostile vested interests. He writes occasionally articles in Konkani dealing with social and grammatical matters and can hold his own in that language on the earth sciences, alias geology. He was hardly the translator into English that we expected for a piece of this type, and probably this is his first essay in it.
However that may be, the translation from Konkani into English has been done surprisingly well, rather faithfully in tune with the original except for some gaffes that have inadvertently crept in and errors in orthography that have not been taken care of, like; transalation; on the cover page, including proper names like Mitchell, which has become Michel, and Bocage has metamorphosed into Boacasa, apart from the printer’s devil that stalks about rather untrammelled over the pages of the book. It is a competent effort no doubt given the translator’s non-literary background yet aided and supplemented by his careful approach to the translation. The language is robust and in tune with the forcefulness of the original without embellishment, setting aside some flaws that have surfaced, e.g. runagate for renegade, maina for mynah, evidences (sic), etc. Some words like “Paulists” could have been explained in the foot-note as meaning Jesuits ( from St.Paul’s College, their headquarters in the then city of Goa, after they took over that college from Fr.Miguel Vaz). There was no need of using the word “padres” instead of the normal priests. Otherwise, it is generally-speaking quite a lucid translation.
The arguments marshalled in this book formed a rejoinder to some observations made by a fellow Goan contemporary of Shennoy Goembab, Raghu-nath Ganesh Talwadkar, in Marathi in that language periodical of the name of Swayamsevak (The Volun-teer) in three instalments beginning from 1st Octo-ber,1925. The Shennoy made mince-meat of the lame arguments on various issues that touched Goans and Konkani, as advanced by Talwadkar, in that periodical, which are put forth in detail in this small book. The first chapter is on the mother-tongue of Goa, which is incontestably Konkani, as he proves, the second dealing with the essential attributes of a language, which Konkani does have undoubtedly, the third looking into the purification of Konkani, on which Talwadkar pontificates with the help of Marathi, and whose arguments the Shennoy pulverises with contempt, the fourth concerned with the rebuttal of minor points like the linguistic character of Stephens “ Krist Purana”. As this Purana was not understood by the local people, it had to be injected with a lot of Konkani, as the author, Stephens, himself says in the preface to that book. It became finally in terms of its diction and content, what Dr. Gerson da Cunha calls, a work in “hieratic Konkani” meaning the language used in worship as opposed to the “demotic” the latter meaning that used by the people in general, deriving from the Greek “hieros” and “demos” respectively, though this assertion does not find mention in this book. The fifth “chapter” consists of an appendix A on the purported first grammarian of Marathi who happens to be that of Konkani, for it is Thomas Stephens who wrote it, being published after his death, in 1640. The sixth is in the form of an appendix B containing the important testimonial in Konkani in a notarial prose of 1678 signed by three Konkani-speaking vaidyas (ayurvedic physicians) in Cochin (Kerala) giving authentication to the compilation of medicinal plants of the Malabar coast, done with their help by the Dutch Commodore Henrik Van Rheede of that city (taken over from the Portuguese), entitled Hortus Indicus Malabaricus. Appendix C relates to the arrival of the first printing press in India, in Goa, in 1556. Appendix D delves into the differences between Konkani and Marathi, in the light of the specious arguments thrown up by Talwadkar, and supported by historical facts culled by the Shennoy from various authentic sources, the references of which are given in the book, with copious notes in the original Sanskrit and other languages, to buttress his counter-arguments to prove that Konkani is distinct from and superior to Marathi intrinsically as a language and that the Konkani-speaking people are more generous and large-hearted than their Marathi counterparts. Enormous erudition is brought to bear on the replies given by the Shennoy.
The Shennoy hit out in a trenchant and at times insulting language, incensed as he was at the crass arguments of the detractors of his homeland, Goa, and mothertongue, Konkani. A sample of his biting diction : “Like the musical chirping of a mynah, its (Konkani’s) tone is mellifluous. I really find it amazing when some people despise such a beautiful homely goddess and develop a fixation for the alien, uncouth and insolent Marathi. In order to side with an alien language like Marathi, to what depths of matricide and treason can one descend ! I do not know from which copy of Periplus Raghunath-bab collected this information. It appears that perhaps he chanced upon it while swimming in the muddied and filthy gutter of Marathi. I cannot help saying that instead of glittering pearls, all he could pick up was a fistful of grimy pebbles. Instead of the Marathi slough, had Raghunath-bab put his mouth to a clean spring, he would have drunk clear Dudhsagar waters. He derides the “pseudo-Marathas” and “pseudo-Lusitanians” of Goa in the same breath and in an equally-critical vein,e.g. “No matter how loudly Goa’s Hindus and Christians declare alien Marathi and alien Portuguese as their own, they will not be able to even pronounce the words like the Marathas and the Lusitanians do in their own respective languages. And he asserts with supreme confidence. “The arguments put forth by Raghunath-bab himself go to prove that in spite of all the antics of both Portuguese and Marathi languages the natural lady of the house in Goa, that is Konkani, will survive and prosper”.
Shennoy Goembab conclu-sively puts it thus. “But my heart tells me that Marathi is not my mother. Konkani alone is my mother. Therefore, I have enshrined her not just in my heart, but in my entire being and have been serving her for over three decades. And I am confident that my fellow-Goans also will henceforth look upon their true mother with love and devotion instead of embracing a wayfarer as their own mother”. And further “ But his (Talwadkar’) monkey tricks shall cause no harm to Konkani. She is now rising day by day and I can foresee that the editor himself will one day write in Konkani”. Those prophetic words are coming true, though versatile Konkani still has to wage a struggle for full recognition in its own homeland.
The Asmitai Pratishthan deserves congratulations on this venture of bringing out the work of Shennoy Goembab in English translation for a wider readership and for awareness of his great mission for the re-integrated Konkani comm-unity.Translations of his other works should follow.
Prince Jacob Special in the Capital
After 20 years Goans in Delhi witnessed a tiatr in Delhi. Rudan (Prayer), a Prince Jacob production, staged its 85th performance to a 500- plus crowd , at Fr Agnel’s school, on a sultry Sunday evening on 21 September 2003. A spirited performance by the cast and supporting crew united goekars in a different land and reminded them of their common heritage and a common destiny. ‘It felt like being in Goa,’ said Prince Jacob, based in Salcette, after the show.
Rudan gave Goans in Delhi a glimpse of the social changes taking place in Goa. Through comedy, melodrama and social satire Rudan dealt with a variety of Goan themes with a nimbleness which had the audience at the edge of their seats unwilling to miss any of the action. The play ingeniously used the character of a scrap dealer Jayasurya (Prince Jacob) to highlight the central theme of the play, viz. the place of ageing parents in Goa vis a vis their children (the younger generation). It is the ‘outsider’ from Sri Lanka, Jayasurya (referred to as the ganti) who offers his insight into Goan malaises. Having settled in Goa, selling scrap, he earns more than the white-collared bank executive Kimberly (Antonieta D’Me-llo) - one of the daughters. ‘You wish to sell your parents as scrap’ he thunders, ‘but your parents are antiques, more precious than whatever money can buy.’
Agnes the nun (Annie Quadros), one of the two daughters, tries to hold the family together trying to make them understand the truth, viz. ‘Devache mukar ami sogllim gorib.’ Torn by the desire to care for her rejected parents, she even decides to leave the nunnery. Sterling performances by Juze, the father (Jacinto Gracias) and Darryl (Anil Pednekar) lent drama to a good script. The remix Konkani version of the song ‘Who Let the Dogs Out’ was an immediate hit specially when the actors dressed as dogs took the stage.
Comedy supremo Humbert Fernandes (bhatkar) in outlandish shorts, and his sta-sta-sta-sta-mmer had the kids yelling with laughter with his jigs and dialogues in the cameos (short scenes) in front of the drop curtain. His attempts to get the better of Jayasurya invariably backfire as in the case of the value of zero, and the witness of a blind man. Laxmi the bajiwali in dark glasses (Janet Almeida) has various schemes to sell her vegetables - each purchase comes with a free nimbu. The father-son duo of Philip and Tony Mascarenhas (saxophone and keyboard) together with Xavier Fernandes (drums) and Mariano Dias (bass guitar) provided scintillating music well suited to the action.
The use of special effects in the scenes of Lazarus coming out of the tomb, and the gun carriage of mother Teresa moving across the stage with a fluttering dove descending, were a treat to behold. Kudos to John Fernandes for the excellent light effects. Stage manager Joaquim Aguiar feels that tiatr must do all it can to promote Konkani - a language under siege, as it were, in Goa from English, Hindi, and Marathi.
Rudan was brought to Delhi by Goekarancho Ekvott, a Delhi-based society to promote the interests of Goans in Delhi.

What NRI Goans can do for Konkani in Goa
PORVORIM, Oct 30: NRI Konkanis (Konkani speakers or their descendents ) from Karnataka and Mumbai have done and continue to do a lot for Konkani and Konkanis of their region. Now it is the turn of Goan NRIs to do something concrete and meaningful for their mother tongue Konkani. A few areas for their Action Plan. 1. Bring pressure on local MLAs, MPs, and government to amend the Official Language Act 1987 to get official and equal status for Roman script on par with Devanagari script. 2. Launch a secular Konkani weekly in Roman script. 3. NRIs could select and publish every year at least 10 Konkani books of a good standard written in Roman script. 4. Publish children's literature. 5. NRIs could establish a few awards (Rs. 50,000/- to 100,000)in the name of their clubs or institutions and give them annually to a deserving person for his/her lifetime achievement to serve Konkani in Roman script. 6. Organise annual competitions or festivals for adults such as: Tiatr, Khell-Tiatr, Khell, One act play, Kantaram, Mando, Christmas Carols, devotional hymns, motets 7. Organise annual competitions for adults: short story, novel, article, poem, article, elocution, essay, short story, poetry, folk story narration, Konkani riddles and proverbs, look at a picture and write a caption, etc 9. Select the first three tiatrs which win prizes at Kala Akademi competition, and have Tiatr festivals in important towns of Goa. 10. Produce good quality audio CDs of Kantaram, songs and jokes. 11. Give scholarships/grants to do research on various topics related to Konkani in Roman script. 12. Establish a full-time Konkani channel for entertainment and news. Such a channel will give a boost to Konkani and talents of younger generation. 13. Times of India: While Konkani is written in Devanagri and Roman scripts in Goa, the government and all its affiliated bodies have refused to recognise Roman script.
The latest example is that of the Kala Academy rejecting a proposal to honour ailing Jesuit priest Father Anthony Pereira for his literature by giving him "Sharada Award". Fr. Pereira has to his credit more than 42 books, all in Roman script. Some of his books speak on the character and behavioural changes in human beings while others speak on religious philosophy.
Several authors and poets from Goa wanting to express their ideas and thoughts used Roman script for their Konkani literature while in Karnataka, they used Kannada script and Malyalam script in Kerala for years together.
For all these writers, it was difficult now to shift over to Devanagri Konkani. Since Devanagri script has been recognised as official, several literary personalities like Fr. Anthony Pereira have been pushed behind the wall and their work was not being taken a note of.
Konkani in Devanagri was included in the eighth schedule of the Constitution hurriedly when Suniti Kumar Chatterjeee was the chairperson of the Sahitya Academy, New Delhi, but the Academy did not take into consideration the existence and use of other scripts like Kannada, Roman or Malayalam.
The Konkani speaking population staying in Mangalore in Karnataka and Kerala therefore feel that Goa and Goans have cheated them by not taking into confidence when an important issue like the language was being thought of in 1987.
The three-men committee consisting of Arvind Bhatikar, Prabhakar Angle, and Pratapsingh Rane, chairman of the Kala Academy outright rejected the proposal on realising that it was for Roman script literature. The members (none of them with literature background) did not care to go through Fr. Pereira's literature.
The younger generation by and large has started rushing towards English thereby leaving Roman script advocates in total minority.
The Roman Catholic Church has started an independent centre called St. Thomas Stephens Kendra at Miramar to advocate the cause of Roman script but, in the eyes of law, Roman script has no place anywhere.
Neither Mangaloreans nor Kerala Goans can voice their grievance against the Devnagari script because politicians in the country in their own wisdom decided it alone without consulting anybody.

Fred Noronha: Take the case of Konkani in Goa. It is claimed that this is the language of 95% of the people (nobody knows the source of this figure, claimed in the Official Language Act). Yet papers like the lone Konkani daily, SUNAPARANT, reported little more than a couple of thousand copies in sales for each issue.
